My Yogic Path

My long journey with yoga began 57 years ago with many teachers and various yoga styles guiding the way.
After arriving in South Africa in 1967 from my birthplace Kenya, I was introduced to the gentle Sivananda style yoga and later progressed to the teachings of BKS Iyengar, giving me a solid foundation to commence teaching classical Hatha yoga. I taught at various health clubs in Cape Town as well as my small studio at home.
In 1998, I met a visiting Kundalini Yoga teacher from USA. This powerful, transformative yoga and meditation led to certification and I became the first teacher in Cape Town from 1999.
In 2007, I opened the doors of Little Samadhi Karoo Retreat in Barrydale, Klein Karoo, Western Cape.

During the next 12 years I gave many retreats to visitors from all over the world. I assisted with Kundalini Yoga teacher training and honed these skills with two lengthy stays at the mother ashram in New Mexico.

I added a deep study of Yin yoga and undertook a 1 year training as a health coach with the Institute for Integrated Nutrition (IIN - USA).
This creative time enabled me to add 5 levels of Kahuna massage (Hawaiian body work) to my mind/body “tools”.
I have also studied free movement (Amerta movement) with the master Suprapto Suryodarmo in Java Indonesia.
Dancing (ballet, contemporary and jazz) has been part of my life since 6 years old.
I have taught at yoga festivals and trainings in South Africa, USA and France.
The great gift of wellness through lifestyle practices has given me balance, calmness, compassion and understanding, and nothing pleases my Soul more than sharing these with others.
I’m also a wannabe artist in my spare time!

Kundalini Yoga

Sometimes known as the yoga of awakening, Kundalini yoga is an ancient art and technology that delivers many benefits on all levels of our being, physically, mentally, emotionally and ultimately spiritually.
The practice is centred around the latent energy of kundalini that resides at the base of the spine. To awaken this energy, the techniques include Asana (yoga postures), Kriya (sets of exercises that have a specific end result, be they physical, mental, emotional spiritual. Pranayama (numerous breathing techniques), Bhanda (body locks that assist the flow of awakened energy, Kundalini, to travel upwards through the Chakra or energy centers in the body.
Bhanda (body locks) that assist the awakened energy to travel upwards through the Chakras, Mantra (chanting sacred sounds) - the yoga of sound.
Mudra (hand gestures that lock or seal the energy flow and reflexes to the brain). The hands are an energy map of our consciousness and health.
And lastly Meditation (where our focus is to master the mind to enable our thoughs to become clear, calm and focused).
While working to raise the kundalini, we also tone, stimulate and detox all the body’s physical functions, such as the nervous, glandular, digestive, hormonal and respitary systems.
The yoga is do-able, regardless of age and physical condition, soulful, fast acting and fun! It gives us the tools to bring about positive change, to recognize our human potential, to make make a difference in our lives, and those of others.

Yin Yoga

In recent years Yin yoga has been welcomed alongside other popular yoga styles and is widely recognized for its many benefits. Yin asanas have their foundation in traditional Hatha yoga, with the additional wisdom and insight of the ancient Chinese Taoist practices that create harmony and health, physically, mentally and emotionally.
In Yin our intention is to pool Chi into the deeper parts of the body, the bones and joints. This means we settle into a pose and become quiet as we consciously breathe for 3-5 minutes. The body feels very relaxed and at ease, the mind feels clear and composed. Other benefits are an easing of physical pain (especially in the joints), an increase of flexibility, as well as flushing and balancing the meridians and releasing negative patterns.
We learn a new meaning of 'living on the floor' with ease and grace. It feels as good as a good holiday!
